• The course deals with the analysis of rectangular and circular wave guides, cavity resonators, excitation of waveguides, surface guiding and dielectric optical waveguides, analysis of microstrip and striplines, scattering parameters, passive microwave components.
  • This course revises time varying fields and Maxwell’s equations, boundary conditions at different media interface. Then introduces students to retarded potentials, plane wave propagation in free space, plane waves in lossy media, wave polarization, Poynting vector, Phase and group velocities, reflection and transmission of plane waves, critical and Brewster angles. The basic concepts of TEM transmission line, transmission line equivalent circuit, transmission line circuit theory, impedance matching and Smith chart are then covered.
  • This course introduces students to antenna theory starting with the concept of radiation and the fundamental parameters of antennas, the types of antennas, antenna arrays, and ending in antenna measurements and smart antennas.

  • Information Theory

In the context of communication, Information theory is the field that studies the properties of a communication system. It gives a quantitative measurement of a communication source and its ability to handle information.

Information theory deals with mathematical modelling and analysis of a communication system rather than with physical sources and physical channels. In particular, it provides answers to two fundamental questions.
    1. What is the irreducible complexity below which a signal can not be compressed?
    2. How to achieve reliable transmission over a communication channel?
