• The objective of this project is to develop an algorithm for the design, testing and manufacturing of small wind turbines. Using the developed model, a prototype wind turbine with a rated output of 1 KW at an average wind speed of 4-5 m/s will be designed. Lab scale turbine blade model of suitable dimensions will be manufactured and tested in the wind tunnel and in the structural labs. Meanwhile the electrical system will also be lab tested. The original design of the 1 KW wind turbine may be reviewed following the results of these tests.

During the design process many details will be considered including:

    1. Turbine blade aerodynamic design.
    2. Turbine blade structural design.
    3. Turbine blade manufacturing.
    4. Generator type, sizing and matching to turbine.
    5. Mechanical aspects of power transmission (shafts, gear box, coupling, bearings, ….)
    6. Control of electrical/turbine system.
    7. Tower structural design.
    8. Safety aspects.
  • The basics of programming using Fortran 90 and Fortran 77 are offered in this short course. The objectives of the course are teaching students the way to build the correct structure of the fortran programs and to use fortran libraries.

The goal of this course is to answer the question: how do we design rockets. By knowing the mission objective and basic mission requirements, we can create a preliminary propulsion system design. The system configuration, mass and system performance could be estimated through this course. We rely in this course on the basics of thermodynamics, thermochemistry and fluid mechanics to develop tools for the design of the propulsive systems. The student may be asked in this course to develop computer codes for the design and performance analysis of the rocket engines.
